Saved This JM from Lowes

I think I got lucky today. I happened to stop at Lowes and found an Acer palmatum Assorted variety Japanese Maple on clearance for $7. It appears that earlier in the day someone must have tipped the pot and knocked out the root ball. Lowes decided to get rid of it. I didn't have time to prepare the planting site and it is really dry in my area because of lack of rain for a couple weeks, so I put it into its pot and covered the exposed roots with 'Mel's mix' (from square foot gardening). I then thoroughly watered it twice in 10 minutes.

All you experts out there.. what's my best strategy? Try to keep it in the pot for awhile to allow it to create a more massive root ball and plant when the weather cools and we get some rain or try planting it right away? I tucked it under my massive sunflowers in my garden to shade it.
