Japanese Maple leaves dying. HELP!

We have a japanese maple in our front yard. It was here when we purchased our house so I have no idea on age etc. Just the other day I noticed one branch that had appeared to have died, all the leaves were brown and shriveled up...crumbly to the touch. Now today I noticed another branch the same way. The rest of the tree appears to be okay but I am really worried! I love this tree, it is so pretty! Is it possible too much water has caused this? I live in the Midwest where we have had way over average rain amounts for August. I really dont see where anything is chewing on it. Do you think it is dying or will it snap out of it???
