Bark cracks from last winter, questions...

Last summer I got a decent deal on a handful of A. rubrum and platanoides, all about 15' tall in large pots.

During winter, several reveived major bark cracks on the north sides. Top to bottom. One had cracks on the west side. Cracking opened up swaths 1-2" wide off, no bark left.

I found that odd, I expected the sunny side would crack. However they get plenty of wind, and they bend northward in the wind. Could that be it?

I just staked them, in case that is the issue, I don't want any healing to be impeded. The cracking is terrible and I fear this winter will bring more cracks. Any ideas, suggestions *besides NOT planting big trees...., I know now) Thanks!
