Strange bark on Norway Maple

I have recently bought a house in central France which has a Norway Maple in the garden. The leaves look quite healthy. The tree is approximately 30ft high. The twigs of the lower branches have a lot of lichen on them and have grown "flanges" so that they are very wide and flat. The flanges are quite brittle. It does not look like normal growth.

Can anyone tell me what is causing this?

Thanks for the image. It clarified the issue. (ie. not an issue after all)

Your tree is a Liquidambar which normally has flanges.

Maple leaves are opposite on the branches.
Liquidambar /eaves look very much like maple leaves but are alternate on the branches.
