A picture of the damage would be helpful.

I bought a clump one close out 4 years ago. It had some significant deadwood in some of the branches. I had to remove up to two feet in places.

The tree is now established and although slow growing, it's filled in to the point that's the prior damage is no longer noticeable.

If you broke the main leader on a single trunk tree, it may be a different story.
