Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' turned red early?

I've had this plant since 2008 IIRC. I've never seen it do this. This year it started turning red in mid-August, and is now fully red! I could go take a picture but it's really gross outside today and the horse flies are more aggressive than they've been all year. It looks like it would look in mid-late October.
I'd be the first to admit if it was some kind of herbicide injury, but I'm absolutely sure I haven't sprayed anywhere near it. Is this a response to this year's weather...those early cool spells we had...or maybe something else?

My bald cypress (probably in response to drought) looks like mid fall right now...with it's orange needles.

I think it's just this weird year...it's dry, but not as dry as I've seen it come through with green needles (or so I think).
