'Orangeola'- still common but not quite as common as the other two and the coloration is pretty unique. My second choice would be 'Garnet'. It has more red than 'Crimson Queen' and in my opinion has a bit better summer color than 'Crimson Queen'.

Ditto what Stompede said. I love my Crimson Queen, but there are more exciting varieties out there.

Of course, you could buy all three and not have to decide. That's probably what I would end up doing! LOL

My Garnet is in the ground in pretty good sun. Outstanding specimen. Holds leaf color well. Now 6 feet tall, 8 feet around, weeping.
I have Crimson Queen and Orangeola in individual planter boxes. These are both in considerably more shade than the Garnet. Not that they couldn't take more sun; they are where they are because that's where they are; and they are easily portable being in planter boxes. The Crimson Queen is one of my oldest JMs. Nice thick trunk. Big Bonsai look with this one. The Orangeola appears to be more of a weeper, very full foliage. I think you should get all 3. Ha. Just stirring the pot.

Thanks so much for your advice!! I went with the Orangeola and my wife says I have to stop now. I now have 7 Japanese Maples in my back yard which is only 25' X 50'...

Would love to get all 3 though..... Our front porch could use some dressing up -- container time? Ha!
