winter protection for new acer griseum?????

hihi i am getting conflicting answers re whether to provide some winter protection for my acer griseum, planted spring 2008 and doing very well in its SSE location...it has grown about a foot to 8 feet or so this first year and is shaping up v nicely...

it started heavy splitting adn exfoliating in july and in this southfacing, tiny front plot against a white house (but mostly sheltered form prevailing winds) i am worried about more serious bark splitting as i can get pretty intense spring temp variation in what is really a 6a garden ..... but i have been assured by so many of its general hardiness that perhaps a trunk wrap ( or i was thinking of stakes adn burlap) isnt really necessary...????

ideas and opinions welcome

thnak you
