JMs: Pots vs. Pots in ground

Hi all!

I have 70 or 80 JMs in pots. I've had a lot of history (much of it recorded here) with tornadoes taking down my shade trees, etc. These JMs are the ones that have survived full, absolute horrible, dry Maryland summers for at least 8 years.

Many I've placed in the yard, since they've survived and are thriving.

Now, there are some I will just have to keep in pots. Here's the question.

I have most in pots buried in the gardens. They don't seem to differentiate between pot dirt and ground dirt, so they root like crazy. If I put them into pots with a dish under them, will the remain somewhat contained?

Every couple of years I have to repot. I hate the trauma of tearing them out of the ground and their too-small pots. I'm thinking if I were able to contain their root growth somehow, it won't be so hard on me them.

What's your experience?

Thanks,

Christine
