Chip budding red maple - when to cut the top?

Hello,

A few weeks ago I tried chip budding some red maple seedlings, using budwood from the parent tree. I unwrapped them this week, and it looks like I have 3 or 4 good takes.

Is it too late in the season to try to get growth from the buds?

I've heard that red maples are prone to delayed graft incompatibility, so my plan is to air layer or mound layer the shoots that grow from these buds. I have failed to get cuttings to root three summers in a row:(

Yes, Acer rubrum's today (named forms) are on their own roots...some from terminal softwood cuttings or tissue culture. When other tree's are chip budded in the field, I have seen most wait till next spring, until new growth is seen and then cut back the understock.....
