JM 'Pacific Sprite'

Hello again!

I have a lovely 'Pacific Sprite' which is handling the Maryland drought pretty well.

I just read it's a vine maple, whereas it's growing here as a small shrub-ish tree.

What then, is the difference between a maple tree and a "vine" maple?

Thx.

Rather than make out I know it all, here's the first hit on the web I saw

Here is a link that might be useful: vine maple

A vine maple is just another species of maple, Acer circinatum, native to the west coast. It can be quite tree-like - I know of many that are large, single-trunked specimens of 20 feet plus. It can also be quite shrubby. It never actually "vines" but in its natural setting can develop into a sculptural, often twisted, growth habit. Vine maples are not Japanese maples but are the only US native maple species that has very close genetic ties to the Asian species.

'Pacific Sprite' is a dwarf form, so will never become very tree-like - more a single stemmed shrub :-) Maybe as much as 4-5' in 10 years but not a lot more.

Ok!
That I get in English. :)

Interestingly enough, it sits next to my 'Vitafolium' right now. They have matching leaves. And I mean matching.
Go figure.

Here they are growing wild on my property.
They get good red color out in the sun and yellow leaves in the Fall in dense shade.

Sprawling, shaded ones like that are known 60' across here. Tall heights have also been recorded.
