Help for another maple affected by drought?

User

Hi, I just noticed the vertical split in the trunk of this maple tree. I can't remember what kind of maple it is. Do you suppose the tree is still viable - or if there is something that can be done to treat the crack? We would really hate to lose it as it is just starting to provide good shade for our patio.

Yesterday was the first that we watered the tree this summer. It isn't something we typically do but we noticed the leaves are turning color, are dry and starting to curl. I started out with the sprinkler very low about the width of the branches, then switched to a soaker hose overnight. I didn't notice the split until this morning. We heard kind of a sharp loud noise outside last night but couldn't pinpoint it - do you suppose it could have been the tree splitting?

Sorry the pictures aren't better.

Thanks in advance for information you may have to offer.
