Japanese Maple Pruning Debacle

I stupidly hacked a few lower branches off our Japanese maple this afternoon, reducing it from a low-branched, elegant thing to an ugly, bare, forked one.

This is what it looks like:

Is there anything I can do to fix it? Will some branches grow back, or have I doomed the tree? :(

It self-sowed several years ago and we previously never touched it. I wish I had just left it alone!

Put...the saw...down.

If the "bare legs" look doesn't grow on you, you could always plant something in front of it.

Recycle, that is a good looking tree you have. Wait till fall and if you like plant a dwarf conifer or under it.

Your tree is fine, just a little different than before
