Starting Japanese Maple Seedling?

Hey all. I have a Japanese maple (or what I believe to be a Japanese maple) in my lawn. We planted it as a small tree 15-20 years ago. It's now quite tall, maybe approaching 15 feet, and I just noticed cutting the lawn this evening it has seed pods growing on it that look like they might be ripe. They look very similar to silver maple pods but smaller and plum colored. I'm wondering if these can be planted to start new trees?
