Pruning a Maple Sapling

I was given a Maple sapling from a co-worker that I transplanted in the spring, it is doing very well, it is about 4' tall now and the trunk is about 3/4" around. The area I live in is fairly windy and I have gotten away so far without staking it, I have a cage around it to keep my dogs away and that keeps it from falling completely over. Ok, now onto my question, the sapling has a fairly established main trunk, but about 2' off the ground, there is a limb growing out that is getting fairly large. From what I have seen so far, the sapling isn't growing as a whole, it is simply growing from the top and adding on. I would like to prune of this lower limb which I think is going to need to be eventually pruned off. Can you guys help me on what I should do?
