Lanky Japanese Maple

I have a Japanese Maple that I purchased 2 years ago. I left it in a container for the first year but I planted it early this spring. The problem is that the tree has only two branches that extend upward for a few feet and thatÂs it. There are no other branches on the tree. It does produce leaves but I am unhappy with its shape. Is there a pruning technique I should try. Can I change its shape?

You can change its shape through careful pruning. You can cut each branch down to a spot where there are 2 buds on either side, which will force some growth and lead to more bushiness. Then you will have to continue doing that each year to encourage the bushiness and encourage side shoots. Good luck.
