Winter Protecting Japanese Maples for colder climates

I moved from a zone 5 to a zone 4 and have longed for a red Japanese Maple so badly, but know they are not cold hardy for my area. I was in an Utah nursery and found one I just fell in love with an 'Emperor I' with so I bought it and decided to see if I could have success if I would protect it during the winter. I started researching on this site for anyone that has had success protecting Japanese Maples in the ground during the winter. I have found two different opinions. One person wraps the entire tree with black Landscape fabric. Another, had the idea of circling chicken wire around the tree and wrapping with burlap. Also, they said they cover the roots with a lot of snow to keep it warmer. I want to grow it in the ground and not in pots. Anyone with any advice or experience with this would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!
