A.p. 'Englishtown' (red witches broom, scarlet fall)
A.p. 'Hagoromo' (green, feathery, yellow-orange fall)
A.p. 'Okushimo' (green star-like leaves, neon yellow fall)
A.p. 'Sensu' (green, fan-like leaves, brite crimson fall)
A.p. 'Shojo Nomura' (red, scarlet fall)
A.p. 'Wou Nishiki' (yellow-green with red margins, brite crimson fall)

Some of those will get wider than 5'. For example, a 'Wou nishiki' in the Seattle arboretum (USDA 8) had an average crown spread of 27' in 1995.

27' after how many years?? Usually dimensions are given for a tree at 10 years of growth. There's also nothing to stop you from getting out a pair of pruners! Bonsai is an example of how effective this can be.. :-)

If you can use a green leaf form it is hard to beat Koto No-no-Ito or Mikawa Yatsabusa.

Shaina, Aratama, Carlis Corner Broom, Ruby Stars/Beni Hoshi(the two are similar) All are Dwarf (under 6ft.), upright (will not spread too much), red leaved varieties.
