Japanese Maple-leaves went limp overnight

I need help with my Orangeola Japanese Maple. This plant is in a container (about 12" in diameter). I bought and planted in June of this year. During the summer grasshoppers attacked it and ate all of its leaves.

It was making a great comeback and was almost fully leaved out again until yesterday morning when all the leaves had gone totally limp. Upon closer inspection it's trunk has been chewed (probably one of my dogs or cats). Can I amputate above the chewed portion? Or should I cut it right back down to the trunk?

I also have another maple that didn't comeback after the grasshopper attack...is there a way to tell if it's alive or do I just wait until next spring in hope it leaves out?

Thanks for any advice...I'm hoping I can save my poor Orangeola somehow...
