Coral Bark Japanese Maple - has strange shooters?

Hi

We planted a coral bark japanese maple last spring, and this year when it leafed out, in addition to the regular leaves it had last year it sent out a handful of very strange shooters/suckers (I'm not a gardener, so I don't know the right terms).

I took pix; am not sure how to include them. But they basically look like long, disproportionate whips, with leaves that are 2-3x larger than the regular, delicate leaves, and these new leaves are a rough dark green.

These long whips don't start at the trunk - there's a place in the branch where the delicate little leaves kind of shrivel up, and then these big rough leaves start. And then that particular branch is super long, and floppy looking; and very much out of proportion with the rest of the tree.

Any suggestions? Anybody know how I can include pix, if that would be more helpful? I think I included a link to a Flickr set ...

Thanks in advance -
