Plantings with Japanese Maples?

I'm planting two Red Dragon Japanese Maples, each in their own large, tiered planter boxes. Any ideas for what to plant beneath them?

Stick with something low growing and shallow rooted - low growing sedums (aka "stonecrops") are a good choice.
