tapping maple with poison ivy

I'm in the process of clearing our "back 40" (more like 2.0, but who's counting) and found some very nice maple trees that I'd like to tap. Unfortunately, the most accessible has a poison ivy climber.

My question: As long as I don't do something stupid (i.e., tap the poison ivy), can I still tap the tree?

Jeff, Why dont you combat the ivy...and do the tree a favor? I dont know about the tap,im assuming you want to make syrup?

Yes, of course.

But I'd spray or at least coat myself with Dawn Dishwashing liquid before I went into the battle with PI.
