Transplanting a Shishigashira Maple

Recently moved to a new house with a beautiful 5ft Shishigashira Maple on the back patio. It was in a concrete trough with a decent root ball about 2ft by 1ft. The trough broke when we tried to move it, then we realised one root had gone through the patio and it was stuck! The root is about 5" wide, growing through the pavers. We can't really dig it out without making a huge mess of the patio, so we were wondering what would happen to the tree if we cut it off at the root - would it survive? It's such a lovely, healthy looking tree and we really want to move it to a much better site in the garden.

Thanks

Julie
