The graft should be a bit above the soil line minumum or higher (or you're at least you'll eventually going to get sprouting from the root stock and shpuild ghave already... how deep is too deep depends alot on how high it is grafted and since you can't find the root flair it could be high who knows!!...It is also not a good sign that you have not, I assume, gotten root stock sprouting from a graft below soil level which a healthy plant would do if planted at that level ...dig that sucker out as suggested and replant propery somewhere else and if it still putters around by next fall torch it!! This is the second post where you use the word Jap Maple. Not good. Sorry, but that word is derogatory for some people. You probably didn't see the discussion on this. Spell out the word or just use AP (Acer Palmatum) for short.

Also, we use JM a lot (for Japanese Maple).

Thanks. It's a common mistake. Even when I buy Japanese Maples from a local nursery they often abbreviate it like that.

Yes I just ignored it since this comes up often but it really is improper sometimes I think things go a bit to far with political correctness but this is an offensive term to many ...My Japanese professor was a little put off when i complained about the Japanese beetle problem I guess I should refer to them by their scientific name...no thats a bit too much to ask I can't even remember how to spell most of my trees correctly or the types of many without tag gazing let alone remember that ;>)David
