Big Tooth Maple

We planted a Big Tooth Maple about 5 years ago and it has grown straight up. Is there anyway to prune it to make it branch out more. I realize now that we should have planted some other kind of tree since we desperately need shade , however we didn't know at the time.

bigtooths get quite big, 30+ feet tall.

just wait a few more years, once it gets good height it'll get wider too.

how tall is it now? should be around 15-20' after 5 years.

Houston, it is now about 20 feet tall....doing beautifully. Guess we are too impatient. A Chinese Pistache that age would be providing a lot of shade by now.
