It was damaged many years ago. either sunburn or sunscald. The result is basically the same. The damaged bark dies as does the wood underneath.

The edges of the living bark are rolling toward each other as the tree works on covering the would.

Bottom line #1: Your "help" (i.e. interference) is *not* needed.

Bottom line #2: Leave it be.
