Got first Japanese Maple!

My friend got me a Tamukeyama Japanese Laceleaf Maple for my birthday. I read that it can get 7-10' high, but the width is 6-12'. Can I prune the width to keep it around 6-7' wide?

Also, how close can I plant it to a patio? Will the roots mess with the patio (pavers)? Can I just install a root barrier?

I'm kind of thinking of putting the tree right at the entrance to where you walk in my backyard. Eventually, I'd like to put a pond, where the maple will be the backdrop to the pond from my kitchen window/back patio. Does that sound good?
