Hogyoku japanese maple: who's getting pumpkin orange fall color??

I have a couple of Hogyoku Japanese Maples and have gotten mainly gold fall color out of them, not the pumpkin orange I've seen pics of.

So for those who own the Hogyoku variety and are getting pumpkin orange fall color, please share details of where you have it planted, 100% full sun required?

I have many tall douglas fir trees on my spot but have planted the Hogyokus in areas where there is a lot of sun but am unsure if the lack of pumpkin orange is due to sun or perhaps our falls here in Puyallup, Washington perhaps aren't cold enough to snap the great color or ???

I just bought another Hogyoku and am trying to figure out where on my lot to try this one so any tips from Hogyoku owners greatly appreciated!

I'm getting orange fall color--not pumpkin orange but definitely orange color. I have it located in an area that gets partial sun in the late afternoon, but is shady for the rest of the time. I don't know if this influences the coloration.

I got a little one in the spring and it hasn't started changing colors yet in my area. It is in a pot right now until I figure out where to put it. I too am trying to get the proper amount of sun. I really like the bright oranges and yellows and hope this tree delivers.

I have three of these growing on my property that were planted 2-3 years ago. One of them went completely bonkers. It was a spindly 3' tall tree with no side branches and is now a multi-trunked 12' tall x 10' wide BEAST, completely full with foliage all the way to the ground. The other two Hogyokus are still pretty small, slow growing like most Japanese Maples are. So when you plant the Hogyoku in the ground you might want to select a space with area for it to grow if it goes bonkers like one of mine did.

I'm guessing my Hogyoku is worth big bucks considering its size and how full it is.

I live in Washington as well and I don't get strong orange colors from Hogyoku. I have two specimens and they both turn a light yellow-orange with green hues. Quite disappointing.

It's possible it will color more as they age(all maples have better colors with age), but I would recommend one of the japonicums for orange/peach/red colors.

At 'Yang's, a local nursury.

Whoa Yangs,

I have had a 'Hogyoku'for about 15 yrs in a pot in full sun. It only turns really orange some years. But it is always colorful at some point each Autumn.

I have a tiny one yr Hogyoku in a pot. I only got yellow color with some orange. A bit disapointing but the tree is so small and frail right now so I'm not giving up yet. I think I will probably plant it out next year in some partial shade and see what happens. I'm hoping it will get better with age as it's roots find the nutrients they need.
