Over wintering tiny Sycamore(?) Maple

basilbird

At the beginning of October I took a small sucker from my neighbor's yard of a Sycamore Maple (that's what she called it) that she had cut down a couple of years ago. My neighbor was in a nursing home at the time and died shortly after. I really want to get this tree established in my yard in her memory. She was a great neighbor and always talked about the history of the tree; it was given to her by a family friend.

Anyway... the sucker was about 15 feet from the main stump on a one inch root. It had a few roots of its own and is about 18 inches high. I planted it near a rock outcropping and watered it well. Of course all the leaves fell off but it seems to have green tips so I'm encouraged that it has a chance.

With winter coming what should I do to help it? I have garden stakes around it so I know where it is. Should I wrap burlap around them to protect it? Or is it better off without anything for maximum air circulation?

I'd be grateful for any advice
