My Tamukeyama not looking so good

Should Tamukeyamas be sheltered from too much sun? Should I maybe be fertilizing it? It's looking like it's dying, but it's not dead, and it's been looking like this for months. Is it perhaps already going dormant? I guess I would expect some fall colors out of it first? It's about 4.5 feet tall, and the only way I can describe it is that it looks dried out. But I water it regularly. It is still in a pot, which is then buried into the ground for now. I was advised to do so, and wait until fall or spring to plant it. So I was toying with this spot, so I actually "planted" it in the pot there to see what I thought (and to keep the wind from knocking it over). It gets shelter from teh sun in late afternoon. I'm not sure if it's dying a slow death, or if it's just starting to go dormant? We have been getting some cold nights here already.....mostly in the low 40's, and the leaves of other trees are starting to fall. Fall is here! But I don't want to lose my tamukeyama!
