Coral bark JM: too much sun?

(Posted this in Trees, and then remembered this maple-specific forum... oops)

I know these trees don't like much sun, and since I'm in Houston, I have placed it (in a pot) where I thought it would get enough but not too much. Most of the leaves are still kinda curled and crispy looking on the ends. Is this the plant telling me that it's still too much?

Right now, I'd say it's getting sun (morning only) for about 3 hours... from around 9am until noon. It starts out dappled because of a nearby shade tree, and it's very close (on the eastern side) to a shed, so about noontime onward it's in full shade.

I water it twice a day - first thing in the morning, and then after I get home. Not too much because I've also read that it doesn't like wet feet. Enough to keep the soil moist, and also a spray over the leaves. It's gotten a little taller since arriving in early September, but the leaves' appearance hasn't really improved.

Does it look like it should be moved to a more sheltered location? It's been in this spot for 2 months now.
