I'm gonna make a forest. Yes. I am.

I'm repotting all my JMs in preparation for winter and another year for some in pots. Some, I want to put into the ground.

Here's my question:

I've read somewhere, in some book, on how to "layer" your trees to create a forest look, showing off the colors in a beautiful way.

Can I remember where? Obviously not.

So... Does anyone have any advice on this, or has anyone read something similar to what I'm describing?

I've flat land with full sun.

I'm planting my JMs that have proved to be sun and drought tolerant little by little. I don't want them to impinge on each other, but I want a forest-y look. The less sun tolerant will someday go in with these as understory trees.

I'm augmenting this collection with a HUGE red maple collection that are mostly all in the landscape. They're perimeter trees, though, so I need to plan a few in the yard to help shade my JMs.

Any advice? Ideas? Experience?
