Poor color on Tamukeyama

We planted a big Tamukeyama about a year ago. It had red/burgundy leaves when we bought it, but this year they are just a dingy green. New sprouts are bright red, but then lose that color. Although it's a beautiful and apparently healthy tree otherwise, the color is dissapointing.
It is located on the south side of the house, and gets full sun for much of the day. It's planted about four to five feet from the foundation, so it gets lots of radiant heat from the bricks. We described these conditions to the nursery when we bought it, and they said it would do fine there. This has been a rough year with the late freeze, record-setting heat and drought. We were able to protect it during the freeze, and have kept it watered through the summer. So, we're baffled.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem could be, and how to regain the red color?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
