Japanese Maple Color question

daninny

We have a Japanese Maple by the side of our house that's been there since we bought the house over 13 years ago. I don't know what type of Japanese Maple it is (didn't even know there were different types until a few minutes ago, to be honest). Anyway, the leaf color has ALWAYS been a deep red color. This year, I happened to notice that the leaves stayed green. Right now, there are a few colors coming on the periphery.

One thing that's different, we have a dog that's a bit over 2 years old and her "spot" is right in the spot where the tree is located. The area is mulched every year. This year is the first we noticed the green leaves (we think the leaves were red last year). Is there a correlation? Any harm? Thanks for any input.
