The Box Elder is a fast grower. It need a good supply of moisture when young. Some consider it a weed or pest. It also gets Box Elder bugs. It can take almost any kind of soil. Clay to gravel. It is a very hardy tree and can take some drought when mature. In the wild it is almost always found along stream banks.
