Japanese Maple Draught Dieback- Can it Be Saved?

I have a small Japanese maple that is in a pot on my deck. I have had it for about 2 years, and this past spring it really branched out and was looking good. However, I sort of forgot about it during the heat of the summer when we had a drought, and forgot to water it. By the time I noticed it, all of the leaves were completely dead and the main trunk was brown about half way down. I have been watering it, hoping it might come back to life.

After several months, it looks pretty much the same, with the bottom of the main trunk still green about half way from the bottom. I am wondering if maybe it is just dormant and still might come back? Should I cut off the dead top and if so should I put anything on it where I cut it?

I have a picture but I am not sure how to attach it. I am very attached to this tree (despite my neglect) and would be very grateful for any advice. Thanks!!!
