Japanse Maple Garden

I have a BEEE-YOU-TEE-FUL Japanse maple, probably 60-70 years old, excellent health. Unfortunately, it is on the boarder of our property, and nearly appears to belong to the neighbors. Additionally, they do a lousy job of painting their wood trim, so right beyond our breathtaking tree is this ugly side door with paint peeling and trash cans. Blech!

So, we've dug out a planting bed off of the maple, and are looking for planting for it. About 1/2 of the bed is midway under the canopy of the tree and therefore in dense shade as soon as spring is well-set in. Yet, we want to plant bushes/shorter trees that can block our yukky view. Now yes, we understand that we don't need hedges to screen...that the eye can just not notice stuff if you disturb the eye. So, what to plant under a maple canopy that has height, can break up a yukky view, yet looks appealing. Any pictures would be helpful!
