I know this forum is mainly populated with JM enthusiasts, but some of you *might* have played around with other maple species.
I've got a vigorous young boxelder(A.negundo) growing in a spot in the barnyard - typically, I regard this species as a trashy, weed species, but this one is in a spot where it could soon provide some needed shade to cows being held in the corral - but...I'd prefer to graft it over to a more desirable sugar maple selection(red maple is out due to its toxicity potential for horses).
Wondered if any of you folks had ever used A.negundo as an understock for any of the other North American maple species.
I'm comfortable grafting oaks/nut trees/fruit trees, and presume I could(and will)graft dormant-collected scions in spring as the tree breaks dormancy, but was interested in experienced feedback - if there is any to be had.
TIA
Lucky
