Differing colors on nearby Japanese Maples

Hello,

I have an older JM that I collect and pot babies from. As they've grown in the pots I put some in the ground.

I have a pot under the "mama" tree and the leaves on both are still green.

I have a pot by 2 in-ground plants, about 30 yards away and a little more shady, and all of their leaves are bronzy, but not red or yellow yet.

Both areas get high shade and no direct sun. The mother tree and associated pot are slightly more open to the sky than the other group, but still mostly overhung by tall oaks.

Since the colors match for both in-ground and potted trees, the micro-climate must be the determinant, but what are those factors? I live in Northern Virginia, USA.
