Identify this maple

Hi can anyone identify this maple leaf, or even confirm that it is a maple)? It is from a tree growing not far from a creek on a trail in Santa Barbara. Elevation 900 ft. There are just a few of these tress in an area with mostly sycamores.

I think it looks similar to Acer macrophyllum, but the leaves are only about six inches across.

Thanks

Stephen

Bigleaf maple often produces smaller leaves on less prime sites.

Thanks bboy.

That makes sense, it is surrounded by large sycamores, so it doesn't get a lot of sun. Although most of the leaves are 6-8 inches I found a few that were about 10"

So I will assume it's macrophyllum until the spring when I will confirm by looking at the flowers, and then the fruit.
