Jackpot. Red fall color of shantung maple seedling

Typically, fall color is yellow with occasional orange reddish but not this red for shantung maple seedlings. I have about 50 seedlings and so far only one has red fall color and rest show yellow color. Not that golden yellow isn't that bad!

I have 4 'Fire Dragon' trees. The red color seems to be similar to my seedling so far. I was just growing shantung maple from seeds for fun to keep me from getting too bored around the house. Maybe do guerrilla planting around here next fall..

The J. Frank Schmidt introductions 'Keithsform' and 'Warrenred' selected by Keith Warren are colorful also. These were raised from seed of Shantung maple, are assumed to have been pollinated by Norway maple but this does not appear to be known for sure.

Many of these have been planted on local streets. Which of the two named clones a particular planting may consist of has not so far been apparent to us.

I've seen those before. One looks more like Norway and one looks more like Shantung. I agree that they are colorful. I've never seen them around here though.

Metro Maples has come up with another red one called Blaine's Dragon and I think it looks very nice for the shape of leaf.

Schmidt web site mentions a difference in leaf lobing but according to patent descriptions both were noticed and selected for having big leaves different from those of the Shantung maples in the seedling rows. And their leaves have pretty similar overall appearance in the photos of each used for the Schmidt web site (there is a page on 'Keithsform' as well as the one on 'Warrenred' I linked to).

It's possible nearly all those planted here are one of the two, most likely 'Warrenred', so that the different features of the other are not being seen by us.

Here (below) the leaf of 'Keithform' may be a little more like that of Shantung maple. The comment about the differences in lobing - one has more lobes than the other - must have been somewhere else, probably the patent descriptions as I don't see it now on the Schmidt web site.

Next year I'll have to look for the more Shantung maple-like foliage among plantings near here. There are lots of these hybrids in Seattle, blocks of them, with more going in.
