Burlapping maples - any dangers?

We had a very harsh winter last year and I lost a couple of unprotected maples. I'd like to minimize the risk of losing any this year.

Is it a good idea to burlap my trees? Are there any risks -- could the lack of airflow cause problems worse than the cold? Could burlapping too early cause problems with them hardening off?

I plan to drive a stake near the trunk, staple burlap to the stake, and then wind it around and up the tree. On the wider spreading maples I'll first tie up the branches as if I were putting the tree in a truck. I'll finish by wrapping the burlap with twine to hold it on. Does this sound right?
