Maple leaves don't turn color or fall

We've got an old maple tree in our backyard, must be easily 100 years old. In the fall, the leaves don't really turn color, just go from green to brown, skipping the red/yellow phase. Then they curl up and die, but stay on the tree pretty much the whole winter.

We have a young maple tree further from the house and it turns bright yellow every fall, and the leaves fall from the tree as you'd expect.

Does anyone know why our older maple acts this way? Does it matter that the older maple is very close to a large pine tree?
