Transplant Japanese Maple

I've had several people interested in buying/transplant my Japanese Maple. I don't think it's anything special. Someone said it might be a atropurpureum...normal. I want it moved anytime between this January and next fall. I've heard dormant season is best. So I assume January or Feb are equally good times? Is there anything I should do know like root pruning to make move easier or more succesful? If yes, what should I do?

Tree data: Maryland (zone 6 or 7) 3" caliper trunk base, 7' high at highest point, and 9' at widest point, but it's not as big as it sounds b/c it has never been properly pruned and has a very irregular shape. It's been in ground for 8 to 20 years.
