Suggestions for sub shrub for acer griseum combination

I bought an acer griseum on sale in November. It has a single leader and looks like a five foot pencil. Any ideas for sub shrubs that would enhance the color of the bark? Right now it looks more pink and white, but I guess it will eventually be orange.

Also does it matter if it gets morning or afternoon sun? I suspect that the cold will be a bigger issue than the summer sun.

Bark damage more likely with eastern exposure. Gray or silvery foliage looks well with the trunk colors. Also purplish. So you could have gray junipers and/or ones that turn purplish in winter - if there is enough sun in the spot.
