 o
hardening off seedlings for selling to nurseries

I was wondering, for those of you that sell tomato seedlings to nurseries or to any outlet for resale, do you harden off the seedlings before you sell them to the nursery, or do they harden them off after taking possession of them?

It occurred to me that if the last frost date for an area is May 1 (for example), the nurseries like to have tomatoes in stock 2-3 weeks in advance of this date, in order to sell to folks that like to plant in walls o' water and other temporary greenhouse type setups. However, these plants that are sold 2-3 weeks in advance of the last frost date would need to be hardened off. So, it would seem to me that the person selling the plants to the nursery would need to harden the plants off some 4-5 weeks before the last frost date in order to sell ready-to-plant seedlings to the nursery 3 weeks before the last frost date. Hardening tomato plants off that far in advance of the last frost date has to be somewhat tricky, eh? It would almost require a heated greenhouse with shading mechanisms to prevent too much exposure during the first few days of hardening off.

I'm interested in selling seedlings to resale outlets, and this question is one I'd like to have answered in advance. Thanks.

Jason

I would contact the outlets you want to do business with and ask them directly.
