seeding mesclun with Earthway seeder

| I like to seed my mesclun mix fairly thick and the lettuce seed plate on my Earthway seeder doesn't do the job at all. At least not with one pass. It seems like it would take several passes and I am wondering if there is a better way. Does anyone use their Earthway for mesclun and have any tips for me? Thank you.

hi david - i broadcast as well as use an earthway. the latter to get 5 rows or so on about a 20 inch bed. i do make two passes and the stand is fine but i wonder if you could drill additional holes into the plate. broadcasting has become my preferred method but fungus becomes an issue in the greenhouse after the third cutting. i have this crazy seeder that i bought out of "growing for market" but it only works in sandy soil i have since been told after much disgust. good luck and happy growing. paul

Thanks Paul. I figured I would need at least two passes and I'll give that a try as well as buying an extra seed plate and experimenting with drilling some extra holes. If I can get it right I'll post the results. David

We are also using an earthway to seed ingredients for a mesclun mix. It's not ideal, but does the job! I too have used the lettuce plate (with 2 passes on top of each other) and had decent success. I have also used the corn/pea plates, which seed a heavier clump of lettuce every few inches. It is worth experimenting with the other plates if you want to increase your seeding rate. One big problem I have had with the earthway is using it for seeding mustards and other brassicas. The radish plate works well initially, but the small round seeds get stuck in behind the plate and get crushed... I haven't found a solution to this. I am curious about the pinpoint seeders but not ready to spend the money quite yet. Roxanne

Use the radish plate for thicker seeding whether planting mesclun mix or lettuce for mixed early bunch cutting and mature cutting. If you cut to thin you'll be left with many nice larger plants. Instead if double seeding try spacing two-three rows only 4" apart.
