Do you plant broccoli for market sales?

| I'm continuing to refine my list of crops for my first year as a biointensive market gardener. Broccoli seems like a crop that would sell well at market but it also seems like it is very inefficient in terms of the yield per square foot. What have your experiences been with growing broccoli for market? Or perhaps it's one of those crops that is worth growing a limit amount of just to add variety to your display? I don't have a large growing area so I don't think it's worth growing for me except maybe just a token amount.

Hey Steve, I do not grow it, but I manage a bunch of Farmers where we have big-time growers of broccoli, and boy does it sell well here! It seems to draw people in. One guy grows several variants, including something that looks like a mace, or a moringstar, lots of pointed spikes, some cauliflower-brocoli cross that takes great. Steven |

| What I ended up doing for broccoli last fall was to cut the main head and then continue to cut the side shoots and sell them as pieces. They sold just as well for me as the heads. About $3 per pound. That way the plant continued to produce until market ended. Janet |

| I grow broccoli as a fall crop. Its a good follow up after harvesting beans or after the first stage of zuchini fizzles out. I transplant by early to mid August along with kale and cauliflower... Bob. |

I don't sell at a Farmer's Market, but in the growing season, I shop the Roanoke Farmer's Market every Saturday. I wait impatiently for the broccoli to finally make it to market, and buy several pounds a week until it's gone. My favorite purchase are the side shoots that kydaylilylady mentioned. The stems are thinner and more tender and I have very little to send to the compost. :) I don't know if you are in my area or not, but please consider growing broccoli! If you sell at my market I'll be a weekly customer. Meg :) |

| If you extensively plant broccoli up wind, close to your dwelling, visitors will want to know how you live with the aroma. |

| Thanks for the feedback. I think I'll plant a small quantity just to add variety to my display, but I don't think I can justify using much of my limit growing area for a large quantity. |
