I want to expand my green bean and wax bean production this year. I want to mechanize in row cult and picking, if possible. I haven't seen any picking machines either commercial or shop built. Any ideas?

raise the price, put up a sign, $ 1 of the cost of beans per pound is for hand picking. Hire some highschool girls or old people. Post there smiling photos near the beans. Mark

You can find alot of cheap cultivators but picking is a chalange and many people give up because of the labor. I usually pick all my beans during the dark hours prior to a market. I figure I can pick as fast with a headlamp as during daylight but I usually pull all plants as I pick, it saves time and energy and I plant for this practice. Two benefits come from this: 1. Everyone loves the freshness, 2. you get to appreciate the quietness of a calm night. One word of caution: watch out for skunks.

You can find all kinds of used and new bean picking machines listed in the American Vegetable grower magazine.
