packaging for mailing plants

Posted by rocketwoman (My Page) on

i've been selling plants for several years at the farmer's market and would like to try selling the plants online. but i'm unsure what would be the best way to package them so they'll make it safely by mail.

would love any suggestions? the plants i sell are veggies (tomatoes mostly), herbs and native wildflowers.

thanks,
lisa

I have been mailing plants all across the US for 9 years now. I always denude the plants of soil (this greatly reduces the weight and also keeps ALL of the AG departments happy!) and wrap the roots in damp (not wet) papertowels. These end up in either plastic baggies, or saranwrap, then wrapped in newspaper. I use US Priority mail. I have never had any plant arrive in bad shape.

I ship everything bareroot, just wrap the roots in damp papertowels. Has always worked well for me.
